Lewis P. Hobart, 95, of Carthage, formerly of Hamilton and Dallas City, passed away at 12:40 A.M. Monday, June 19, 2017 at Hickory Grove Assisted Living in Carthage.
Lewis was born July 30, 1921, the son of Orin Leslie and Effie Mae (Allen) Hobart in Webster, Illinois. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served during WWII as a Seaman First Class from 1942 until his Honorable Discharge in 1945. On June 28, 1947, he was united in marriage to Dorotha “Dottie” Wagner at the Sante Fe Methodist Church in Ft. Madison, Iowa. Lewis worked hauling canned and bulk milk. He then worked as a Star Route contractor for 34 years for the U. S. Postal system retiring at the age of 80. Lewis was a member of the American Legion and was a trustee for the Pontoosuc Community Church. He loved his family and they enjoyed hearing stories of his childhood escapades and experiences in the Navy. He and Dottie loved traveling to bluegrass festivals and visiting their children and grandchildren.
Lewis is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Dottie Hobart, of Carthage; two daughters, Debra (Paul) Johnson of Anamosa, Iowa and Jan Marie Hobart of Jackson Hole, Wyoming; two granddaughters; and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Arthur, Floyd, Lyle and Willis; three sisters, Laveta, Delta and Reva; and a cousin, Virgil Berry, who was raised in the family home.
Private services will be held at a later date.
