Oakland Cemetery Restoration Event Saturday

Keokuk community citizens are coming together to preserve the history that is located in Keokuk’s oldest cemetery. Lee County Veteran’s Project founder Terry Altheide reported recently that efforts have picked up in recent years to restore damaged headstones at Oakland Cemetery on the West Side of Keokuk. According to Altheide the Veteran’s Project has been joined by volunteers from the Calvary Baptist Church as well as members of the Keokuk Park and Recreation Advisory Board to restore over 50 stones of various size which have been damaged by vandals, downed trees, and in some cases just gravity over time. The projects have included gluing broken stones together and replacing fallen stones to their original spot. Now the groups have set Saturday November 4th as they next day when restoration efforts will take place again and the public is invited to the Old Catholic Section of the cemetery to help restore stones at 9AM.
