Marie Schmitt, 103, of Warsaw, passed away at 4:15 AM, Sunday, December 17, 2023, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.
Marie was born May 18, 1920, the daughter of Albert H. and Frieda E. (Wemhoner) Staaf in Adams County, Illinois. She attended Warsaw High School graduating in 1938. On May 18, 1948, she was united in marriage to Oswald Schmitt in Warsaw by Rev. Raymond Knudsen. Marie had worked as a waitress at several local restaurants, she also worked for Osgoods and was co-owner of the GE Electric Store in Warsaw. Marie later worked in the cafeteria at Warsaw High School for twenty years and Meals Plus for eleven. Marie was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Warsaw, Presbyterian Women’s Association, Warsaw B.P.W. and the Senior Citizen’s. She was an active community member and enjoyed her many volunteer activities.
She is survived by a nephew, Norman Faeth.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oswald; one brother, Harold Staaf; and a nephew, Arlen Staaf. She was the last of her immediate family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Warsaw with burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw. Memorials may be directed to the Warsaw Presbyterian Church or the Warsaw Ambulance. Printy Funeral Home of Warsaw is in charge of arrangements.
