John Arthur Neally, 67, of Carthage IL, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2024, after a strong fight against pancreatic cancer.

John was born on December 6, 1956, to Frank “Brud” Neally Jr and Patsy (Mapes) Neally in Carthage. After John graduated from Carthage High School in 1975, he went on to study at Carl Sandburg College.

John served as an officer with the Hamilton Police Department for two years and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office for four years.  He loved his time in law enforcement.  In 1984, he was elected to office as the Hancock County Circuit Clerk.

John went on to have four wonderful children; Joshua, Jacob, Olivia, and Jared Neally.

In 2022, after thirty-eight years as Circuit Clerk, John retired.  He spent time riding his motorcycle, going for long walks around town, visiting with family and friends, and spending time with his treasured grandchildren.  He never knew a stranger and was a friend to all.  The steadfast and unwavering love he had for family and close friends is something that will truly be missed.
