William “Sonny” L. Briley, 87 of Keokuk, IA passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at Southeast Iowa Regional Health Center in West Burlington, IA.
He was born August 15, 1937 in Keokuk, IA the son of William Allen and Gladys Marie Rhea Briley. William graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1955.
William was married to Pat Hagmeier. They later divorced. On October 16, 1981 he was united in marriage to Joan Spurgeon. She preceded him in death on November 19, 2016.
William had been employed as an over the road truck driver by Vermillion Brother’s Trucking, Gem City Trucking and retired from Donald Holland Trucking. Over the course of his career, William proudly drove over a million miles without a single accident. Until just three weeks prior to his passing, he was still actively working for Commercial Contracting Services, where he was “Pops” to all.
William was a former member of the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Club.
He was a passionate sports enthusiast, especially fond of baseball and a devoted New York Yankees fan. He also enjoyed car racing and staying active and was always ready to visit with friends. Above all, William loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children, Bill A. Briley of Watkins, CO, Bradley A. Briley of Watkins, CO, Barbara Calloway (Robert “Cal”) of Williamsburg, VA and Amy Wilkinson (Eric) of Thailand, fifteen grandchildren, Hunter, Alexis, Zackary, Gabby, Kevin, Crystal, Tori, Sabrina, Larry, Jr., Cody, Jessica M., Alisha, Dereck, Jessica H. and Dillon and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Liz Newberry (Rodger) of Keokuk and Dorothy Burrell (Rich) of Keokuk, sister-in-law, Pat Rhea of Keokuk and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and six step-children.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Kevin Hardcastle officiating. Burial will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Keokuk.
Visitation will be held from 5 – 7 p.m., Monday at the funeral home with family meeting with friends at that time.
Memorials may be made to the family in care of Barbara Calloway.
