James M. Blackwell, Sr., 82, of Keokuk, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.
James was born on August 29, 1943, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Charles H. and Ardeth L. (Johnson) Blackwell. A lifelong resident of Keokuk, James was employed in delivery service for Montgomery Ward and later as a handyman, a true “jack of all trades”. James was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and enjoyed relaxing with a fishing pole in his hands. His legacy will live on in his family, whom he cherished. James loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all his heart and enjoyed making them laugh with his jokes and stories.
James is survived by his long-time significant other Marlene M. Prince of Fort Madison, Iowa; his son James M. Blackwell, Jr., of Burlington, Iowa; his daughter Carma S. (Dale) Broome of Des Moines; his brother Lee Blackwell of Fort Madison; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and very close friends that become his family.
James is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Lee Ann Blackwell; three brothers: Gale, Jerry and Larry Blackwell; and his nephew William “Billy” Blackwell.
According to his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and burial at a later date will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa.
DeJong-Printy Funeral Home of Keokuk is in charge of arrangements.
