Much of South Dakota winter wheat rated fair

About half of South Dakota’s winter wheat crop started 2022 in fair shape. The USDA says 49% of the crop is called fair, an increase of 15% from the end of November 2021, with 38% rated good to excellent, up 2%, and 13% in poor to very poor condition, down 14%. Drought in the Plains is having an impact on winter wheat in Kansas. The USDA says 33% of the crop is in good to excellent shape, a drop of 18% from the last report in mid-December, with 25% rated poor to very poor, a jump of 11%. Illinois sees warmer than normal December

December was warm and slightly wetter than normal for much of Illinois. The USDA says the average statewide temperature was nearly 10 degrees above normal, with fractionally more rainfall than the usual year.
