The Missouri Attorney General and the Missouri Department of Agriculture caution farmers and ranchers to be aware of scammers as they purchase hay for livestock. The Attorney General says there have been at least 12 complaints from Missouri farmers who have responded to a fake advertisement on social media where they’re told to wire money to a bank account after which the hay will be delivered, but then, they don’t […]

Collapse continues for corn, soybeans, wheat

Soybeans were lower on fund and technical selling, ending the week mixed, with nearby months up and deferred contracts down. Some forecasts had a better chance of rain in parts of the Midwest, but likely not enough to break drought conditions. Still, the critical month for soybeans is August, so there is time, with El Nino conditions expected to fully emerge later this summer. Contracts were lower for the second […]

Cattle placements see first gain in months

Placements of cattle into U.S. feedlots were higher in May, the first increase since late last year. The USDA says those placements were larger than expected, up 5% from May 2022 at 1.955 million head, most of those weighing between 700 and 900 pounds, heading to market between November and February. That year-to-year jump can be tied to increased feeder cattle imports from Canada and Mexico. Marketings during May were […]

Red meat in cold storage down, poultry up

U.S. red meat supplies in cold storage fell sharply during May while poultry stocks swelled. That lower move for pork and beef can be linked to the official start of grilling season and generally solid demand because red meat production for the month was record large. Red meat totaled 975.31 million pounds, a decrease of 11% on the year, including a 20% drop in beef to 423.465 million pounds and […]

The volatility in the cash hog market continues as prices have been climbing off the lows earlier in the year. Lee Schulz, a livestock economist at Iowa State University says seasonal production is a large factor.  “This is typically a time where you do see stronger prices as you get into summer with tighter supplies and tighter demand as you’re working through summer grilling and promoting pork to see strong demand.” […]

Hinson introduces flood mitigation bill

A new bill in the U.S. House would help improve flood and drought mitigation through existing USDA conservation programs. Iowa Republican Ashley Hinson says the Flood Resiliency and Land Stewardship Act is timely for farmers. “I’m very cognizant that while 15 years ago we had way too much water, obviously right now we don’t have enough. While we can’t control what the weather does, we can control how prepared we […]
