Kansas farmer says winter wheat yields inconsistent, protein higher than expected

East Central Kansas farmer Paul Renner says his winter wheat harvest has been a mixed bag so far. “We’ve harvested about four or five fields.  The high has been about 45 bushels per acre and low has been in the high teens to mid 30s.” He tells Brownfield the crop struggled through weed pressure, immense drought stress and early freeze, but late season rain brought some optimism. “It’s been a […]

Agronomist concerned about weed pressure

An extension agronomist says weed pressure has been heavier than normal during the growing season. Iowa State University’s Meaghan Anderson says some farmers have had a tough time keeping waterhemp in check. “Now that we’ve pretty much wrapped up most of our post applications, I’ve started to notice that we really did have some trouble controlling some of those weeds.” She tells Brownfield now is the time to scout fields. Drought is getting serious quickly

Mike Frazier, a farmer from Kahoka, Missouri tells Brownfield missed rains are taking a toll on the corn and soybeans. “Corn is shrinking on the clay. It’s getting serious quickly.” He says a half inch of rain would save the crop for a few days, but […]

Meanwhile, near- or above-normal rainfall across most of the U.S. should contrast with drier-than-normal weather from the Four Corners States to the western half of the Gulf Coast […]

Crops “even out” after extensive replanting in Minnesota

Corn and soybean stands are evening out after a wet spring caused replanting in south-central Minnesota. Cole Trebesch of Sleepy Eye tells Brownfield heavy rains were frequent in April and early May. “So we replanted probably 20 percent of our corn, and all the beans we had in when the rains hit us. But other than that stuff is really starting to look nice finally now, beans look really good. […]

Cattle futures sharply higher due to lower moves in corn

At the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, live and feeder cattle futures were sharply higher with feeders in the lead on the lower move in corn. That helped contracts shrug off the recent trend in beef and the week-to-date’s lower direct cash business. August live was up $1.40 at $171.15 and October was $1.72 higher at $174.67. August feeders were $2.95 higher at $230.67 and September was up $3.10 at $234.52.  There […]
