Slow development in corn, soybeans could hit developmental crossroads this summer

A agronomist says slow growth and development for corn across areas of the Midwest could increase the chance of heat stress this summer. Michael Toohill with AgriSompo North America says crop emergence has been slow in the Eastern Corn Belt and Delta region. “Running through Central Illinois, even the corn planted in the late April is only V4 or V5 and the mid May corn is just V2 or V3. Farmer says ’23 diesel prices likely to be higher than this year

A Southwest Nebraska farmer says the future cost of diesel fuel is alarming. A $1.1 billion meat processing plant has been proposed for western South Dakota. Project managing partner Megan Kingsbury tells Brownfield daily slaughter capacity would be around 8,000 head, and they’re hoping to break ground on the one-million square foot facility in 2023. “There is an extreme monopoly in the processing world right now,” Kingsbury said. “We are out to spread that wealth back around and put the producers back on […]

Welcome rains on the central, southern Plains; more rain for parts of the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, thunderstorms in the vicinity of a cold front are heaviest in the middle Mississippi Valley.  Meanwhile, cool but dry weather in the upper Midwest favors late-season planting efforts, except in areas where fields remain too wet to support farm machinery.  On May 29, U.S. corn planting was 86% complete, tied with 2011 for the second-slowest pace of the 21st century.  In 2019, only 62% of the […]

Wetness continues to slow Ohio farmers

Continued wetness is slowing down Ohio farmers.  USDA reporters say the state’s moisture levels are 52% adequate and 47% surplus, and that is making it hard for farmers to finish tillage and planting. As of Sunday, 72% of Ohio’s corn is planted with 51% of the crop emerged. Fifty-six percent of the state’s soybeans are in the ground with 29% of them emerged. Ninety-six percent of the oats are now […]
