USFRA says ag needs science-driven focus to combat climate change

The head of U.S. Farmers and Ranchers in Action (USFRA) says agriculture needs additional resources to predict the long-term impacts of climate change. CEO Erin Fitzgerald tells Brownfield producers should have climate-smart risk modeling. “So that our farmers as they are making decisions on their farms, we can see 5, 10, 15 years out what that does.  We are definitely not at that place.” She says weather extremes pose the […]

Protecting valuable nutrients this spring

An agronomist says higher input prices mean farmers need to take more steps to mitigate risk.  Tim Laatsch is the technical agronomy manager for Koch Agronomic Services.  “In this crop year, nitrogen is simply too valuable to lose,” he says.  Laatsch says farmers can’t control the price of fertilizer or the weather, there are some variables they can control.  “Following the 4R framework, selecting high-efficiency nutrient sources, stabilizing nitrogen against […]

Researchers asking for farmer soybean data

A new online cropping tool is expected to provide Midwest farmers with field-specific management guidelines. Michigan State University’s Manni Singh tells Brownfield the project is currently in the data collection phase and needs farmer input. “We are looking for field-specific information that might be unique to a farmer and might be different from even your neighbor,” he says. Over the next three years, researchers will overlay producer data with soil, weather, […]
