Wisconsin sees high count of black cutworm moths

Wisconsin farmers are being advised to watch for black cutworm damage once crops emerge.  Krista Hamilton with the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection says a substantial number of black cutworm moths were caught in pheromone traps in the week ending May 4th, with the highest numbers found in Barron, Dunn, Chippewa, and Rusk counties.  The 50 traps had an average of 11.3 moths per trap last week, […]

Rice Production Program sign-up starts soon

Signup for the USDA’s Rice Production Program will begin the week of May 8 for farmers who experienced losses in the 2022 growing season.  The program will provide up to $250 million to rice farmers based on planted and prevent plant acres for the one-time program. Most U.S. dairy products had higher production in March

Several dairy products had more production in March.  USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service says total cheese output was 1.23 billion pounds excluding cottage cheese.  That’s 11.7% higher than in February but 0.2% less than a year ago.  Italian-type cheeses totaled 512 million pounds, up 11.5% from February but 1.5% below March of last year.
