Karla McCarty

Karla McCarty, 67, of Kahoka, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Beloved Health Center in Hannibal.

She was born August 17, 1958, the daughter of Robert and Condella “Joyce” Collins Miller.

On June 19, 2005, she was united in marriage to James McCarty, he survives.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her stepchildren, Tammy McCarty (David Markell), Sherry Slominski (Ken), and Dakota McCarty (Angela); five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Conda Waterman (Gerald); one brother, Mike Nye (Diane); two sisters-in-law, Patricia Petty (Tom) and Priscilla McVeigh (Dave); one brother-in-law, Gary McCarty; her aunt, Marilyn Wallerstedt; her caregiver, Douglas Bucher; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Vizinia O’Neal (Pat) and Joyce Ann Peterson; her niece, Vizinia Michelle Long; her nephew, Chris Waterman; and her sister-in-law, Debra McCarty.

Karla worked various jobs throughout her life, but her most rewarding role was caring for her horses, where she found true peace and purpose. She had a huge heart for all animals and never turned away a stray, often opening her home to any creature in need. Karla was always there for anyone who needed a helping hand or a listening ear, and she was lovingly known for “collecting strays”—both people and animals—who always found comfort, acceptance, and love with her.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

The Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka is assisting the family with arrangements.
