Officers from the Keokuk Police Department were called to the corner of 6th and Blondeau around 4:30 PM on Sunday for the report of a disturbance involving several individuals.
Witnesses said the altercation involved shouting between one male and two females.
Words were exchanged by the two parties and one of the females dropped a bag believed to belong to the male in question.
The bag opened upon hitting the ground and witnesses said it appeared several hatchets came out of the bag.
The man began to put the items back in the bag and the closest female assisted him as well.
According to witnesses, the male also swung at the female near him, one witness said it may have been at the phone in her hand as she may have been videoing the situation. One witness reported the male supposedly said something along the lines of “get that thing out of my face.”
The police were then called by onlookers at the Grand Theatre and several others across the street at Lucky’s Pub and Grub threatened to do the same.
All three individuals made their way down the street, continuing to exchange words, with one of the females getting into a car and the other going into a nearby house.
A car stopped in the middle of the street on 6th between the male and the house. Another male leaned out of the window and began exchanging words with the other male in question.
Some of the words exchanged included reprimanding the individual for “putting hands on a female” and challenging him to a fight if needed.
Three squad cars arrived on scene and took control of the area. The first male was put in the back of one of the cars, but was not put in handcuffs at the time of arrival.
Officers began to investigate the bag and question nearby witnesses.
Officers did not release the names of the involved individuals and when asked about the situation they said they did not have much information at this time. The incident remains under investigation.
