The USDA reports as of Sunday the corn crop is rated 50% good to excellent, down 19 percentage points on the week and soybeans are rated 51% down 12 points, as a majority of the state battles drier than average conditions. Rob Schaffer of El Paso tells Brownfield most of his corn and soybean acres in McLean and Woodford […]

Michigan dryness continues

Continued dry weather is starting to impact crop emergence and conditions in Michigan. Corn Marketing Program of Michigan Director of Research and Agronomy Kristin Poley tells Brownfield there’s no rain forecasted until at least the weekend. “And if we don’t get any rain and emergence continues to happen, we expect that to be a little bit spotty in places, especially where there is less moisture due to soil texture and […]

Southwest Minnesota farmer replanting after heavy rain

Farmers in southwest Minnesota are replanting after recent heavy rains. Mike Landuyt of Walnut Grove says a storm dumped five inches a day after he finished corn planting. “I ended up having to do some replanting on the corn. The beans that we had in before that rain, we thought there was going to be some issues, but they eventually made it through and the spots seemed to fill in.” […]

Uneven stands and timely rains

An agronomist in northwest Missouri says there are uneven corn and soybean stands as the crops advance. Erin Marlow with Cropwise Consulting tells Brownfield crop residue didn’t break down as well after last fall’s harvest due to the dry conditions. “Soybean stands had losses of 20 to 30%, but I don’t worry about that as much about that as I do with corn,” she says. “There were a few corn […]

West Coast port disruptions concern U.S. red meat exporters

A breakdown in labor talks has slowed port operations across the west coast.  On Friday work stoppages effectively closed the Port of Oakland and drastically reduced workflow elsewhere.  Dan Halstrom, president and CEO of the U.S. Meat Export Federation says the year-long contract dispute is a major concern for U.S. red meat exporters. “It’s the number one location for exporters to ship from key markets,” he says. “Chilled markets like […]

Top-end yield coming off by the day

A crop consultant says every day without rain in Michigan is causing greater yield losses. “It’s extremely dry.” Frank Marcello tells Brownfield the area he covers in central Michigan only received sixth-tenths of an inch of rain in May. “Unless the ground was extremely poorly tiled and always had a lot of moisture in it, the stands that are established, they’re losing yield potential, especially on the corn, every day,” […]
