Planting delays complicate grain marketing

Planting delays have some farmers feeling uneasy about marketing. Les Anderson grows corn and soybeans in southeast Minnesota and tells Brownfield he’s barely turned a wheel this spring. “The wildcard is the price of the inputs and are you going to be able to get fertilizer, and there’s so much uncertainty there. The dollars are that much bigger now and there’s bigger ways to mess up your marketing.” He says […]

Kevin Cox raises corn and soybeans in Clay and Parke counties. “We got two days of corn planting in, and we got rained out one night. Kelly says permanent E15 sales can curb inflation and could increase demand

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly says the ethanol industry can support increased demand for permanent, year-round sales of E15. She tells Brownfield there’s adequate infrastructure to deliver the fuel to retailers. “There is now. Now, if demand is goes sky high, we may have to beef that up. But at the moment, I think we have the infrastructure to get that distributed.” She says E15 sales can help curb inflation at […]

Soil health research links increased carbon to better drought protection

New research by the Soil Health Institute is working to measure soil organic carbon and its water retention properties to better combat drought. Researchers say new models developed in the study found as much as three times more water is available with increased soil organic carbon.  Soils with better water holding capacity also had larger amounts of calcium carbonate which authors say should incentivize farmers to use more responsible soil […]
