H5N1 high alerts in place until outbreaks diminish

The Michigan Department of Agriculture is asking poultry owners to report any suspicious case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza as migrating birds move north.

State veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland tells Brownfield until last week, there have not been any reported cases in Michigan since 2015 when the disease was reported in wild birds.

“Birds are often found dead, sometimes there’s enough warning to know that they’re just not eating and drinking as per normal,” she says.
