Southwestern Ohio farmer Jeff Sollars says market volatility is top of mind as the planting season approaches.
“Like the majority of a lot of people I’ve talked to, we started selling things too soon,” he says.
He says fertilizer costs and availability are also concerning.
Sollars tells Brownfield to manage risk,”we price ahead or will book everything ahead of time. That seems to work well. When we’ve seen on the chemical side that there could be shortages of different materials, we called suppliers and requested a price and said we’d take delivery now and they were very accommodating.”
He says moisture on his operation is above average, but he expects the ground to be ready for nitrogen application in late March or early April.
