The Minnesota Board of Animal Health is banning poultry sales and exhibitions because of highly pathogenic avian influenza.

The ban goes into effect April 1st and will last 31 days.

State Veterinarian Dr. Beth Thompson says viruses like high path avian flu need hosts to continue to spread, so one of the best things that can be done right now is pausing poultry events.

The ban includes all poultry community sales, swaps, fairs, exhibitions, and other events where poultry and susceptible birds are brought together.
