South Dakota farmer Doug Simmons is pinching pennies to compensate for fertilizer costs that have doubled, and in some cases, tripled.
“Along with the price, there is some question of availability on some of our chemicals,” said Simmons, president of the South Dakota Wheat Growers Association, in an interview with Brownfield Ag News at Commodity Classic, “so that’s going to be obviously a big issue coming into this spring.”
With costs fluctuating from lower to higher, Simmons admits to occasionally “flying by the seat of my pants”, but also does some pre-paying on inputs.
