A bipartisan group of lawmakers wants the FDA to use dairy standards of identity when forming labeling guidelines for plant-based milk alternatives.
In a recent letter to the heads of the Food and Drug Administration and the Office of Management and Budget, the Representatives say the FDA has not enforced dairy standards of identity for decades which has led to nutrition misinformation.
The group points to studies that reflect consumer confusion and findings by the medical community on how plant-based imitation products are not as nutritionally equivalent.
