Lee County Sheriff Stacy Weber feels that due diligence has been done in selecting which deputy will be the handler for the incoming canine unit. 3 internal candidates applied to become the officer responsible for Alex, the new dog headed to the Sheriff’s department to pilot the canine program. Weber enlisted the help of the experts on the matter in his canine committee to help him select his candidate. Weber feels that with the input of the committee, the Sheriff’s Department got the pick right. Dakota Foley will handle the canine unit after previously serving in the U.S. Army as well as the Keokuk Police Deparment before joining the Sheriff’s Office nearly 2 years ago. The new canine, Alex is scheduled to arrive in northern Iowa in 2 weeks where he and Deputy Foley will begin training together for 4 weeks before beginning their work together in Lee County.
