Bunge, Nutrien announce low-carbon alliance

A new alliance between Nutrien Ag Solutions and Bunge will support soybean farmers’ carbon reduction efforts. Dr. Sally Flis leads Nutrien’s sustainable agriculture team. “What is the carbon intensity score associated with soybean production in some areas that we’ve selected in Iowa and Indiana? Hawley blasts SCOTUS ruling on Prop 12

Republican U.S. Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri says Proposition 12 oversteps boundaries. “We have a commerce clause in order to prevent any one state from regulating the commerce and production of other states,” he said. “Frankly, I think that’s what California is trying to do.” The U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld the California law which bans sales of pork, veal, and eggs from animals whose confinement does not meet minimum […]

Bearish run continues for soybeans, corn, wheat

Soybeans were lower on fund and technical selling, with nearby months down sharply Friday, adding to what were already big weekly losses. Contracts were up early but could not follow through due to slow export demand and crude oil selling off. Near-term planting weather is favorable in most of the Midwest and Plains. Brazil continues to hold most of the export market, but that could shift as their prices move […]

A farmer in eastern South Dakota finished planting on Friday. Paul Casper tells Brownfield once he could get into the field to plant corn in early May, progress moved quickly. “Our last corn field is popping through the ground. Emergence has been even and we had dryness early on, but recent rains helped make up for any mistakes we had,” he says. “The soybeans are looking good.” Casper says with […]

Cattle industry continues to contract

The USDA’s latest Cattle on Feed report indicates further industry contraction. Placements of cattle into feedlots during April 2023 were down 4% from April 2022 at 1.75 million head, towards the middle of pre-report expectations. The year-to-year decline can be tied to tighter available numbers. And while corn prices have softened and pasture conditions have improved in some states, other major feeding areas continue to face drought conditions and tight […]

Producer says rain has provided some hope for hay crop, cattle herd

A Western Kansas farmer and cattle producer says recent rains may have provided enough relief to avoid selling off his cow/calf herd.   Chriss Tanner of Norton tells Brownfield hay supplies are extremely tight. “I am down to 90 bales left on the farm and when the hay is gone, it’s not financially advantageous to try and feed the cows through that. I’d be better off to liquidate the rest […]
