Crops “even out” after extensive replanting in Minnesota

Corn and soybean stands are evening out after a wet spring caused replanting in south-central Minnesota. Cole Trebesch of Sleepy Eye tells Brownfield heavy rains were frequent in April and early May. “So we replanted probably 20 percent of our corn, and all the beans we had in when the rains hit us. But other than that stuff is really starting to look nice finally now, beans look really good. […]

Cattle futures sharply higher due to lower moves in corn

At the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, live and feeder cattle futures were sharply higher with feeders in the lead on the lower move in corn. ASA critical of EPA’s RFS rule

The American Soybean Association says the latest rule setting biofuel blending requirements significantly undercuts the industry’s ability to increase production and grow demand. Dave Walton, chair of the biodiesel and infrastructure advocacy team, tells Brownfield the Renewable Volume Obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard don’t accurately reflect industry growth for biomass-based diesel.  “The disappointment, I think, is that EPA is not using the RFS or RVO to push carbon reduction […]

Drought worsens in southeastern Iowa

Southeast Iowa farmer Tim Meyer says his crops are handling the dry conditions better than expected. “Corn is starting to curl just a little bit, but it’s not as bad as I’ve seen in other places. I do think that we’re going to need some significant moisture in the next two weeks or we’re going to start to see some yield loss here if we don’t.” He tells Brownfield, “We’re […]

Wheat variety trials showcasing drought tolerance

A wheat breeder says disease pressure is limited in on-farm trials this year because of dry weather in Michigan. Michigan State University’s Eric Olson regularly studies genetic resistance to fusarium head scab. “We have not seen a significant level of disease across the state this year,” he shares.  “However, in our scab nursery on campus we are just starting to see the beginnings of the epidemic.” Trial results will be […]
