Roger Dean Thurman, 68, of Warsaw, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, with family and friends by his side, after a long battle with cancer.
Roger was born October 10, 1955, in Covington, Kentucky, to Jennings and Dorthy (Rhodes) Thurman. He was united in marriage to Sharon Kay Prewett on August 21, 1976 in Warsaw, Illinois. Sharon was his lifelong sweetheart. She survives.
Roger was a 1974 graduate of Warsaw High School. He worked at J.B. Automatic for 32 years and then worked at Siemans for 7 years, where he retired. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering in his garage. Sharon said he was a jack-of-all trades. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and grandkids, who were his pride and joy. Roger was a fighter and he fought hard until the end. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend. Roger had a strong faith and was very knowledgeable of the Bible. His memory lives on through the lives of those around him. Roger will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by those who knew him.
Roger is survived by his wife Sharon of 48 years (53 years together); son Jeff (Katelyn) Thurman of Montrose, Iowa; six grandchildren: Christopher (Hope) Thurman of Quincy, Illinois, Zachary Thurman of Hamilton, Illinois, Maci Cochenour of Medil, Missouri, and Jase, Payton and Collin Thurman all of Montrose, Iowa; and three great-grandchildren: Dre’Shon, Dayson and Alice. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Tony Thurman of Hamilton, Ohio, Judy (David) Quimby of Fairfield, Ohio, Teresa Mason of Warsaw, Illinois, Eva (Mike Boley) Thurman of Warsaw, Karen Humphrey of Keokuk, Iowa, Annie (Wade) Kehler of Hamilton, Illinois, and Stan Thurman of Peoria, Illinois; brother-in-law Joe Shuman; and several nieces and nephews.
Roger is preceded in death by his parents Jennings and Dorthy, in-laws Lewis and Viola Prewett, son Micheal Dean Thurman (41 years old), sister Lois Shuman and brother Steve Thurman.
Per Roger’s wishes, there will be no visitation or services. Private burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in Warsaw, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lutheran Cemetery Improvement Fund at Hill Dodge Bank, Lee County Hospice or H.U.G.S. of Hancock County.
