Land prices continue to climb

An ag real estate expert says the high price tag on land shouldn’t shy farmers away from making purchases. Randy Dickhut with Farmers National Company says there’s been an increasing number of $20,000-plus per acre sales. “Those are the ones that everybody sees and has been written about,” he said, “but a lot of land trades for much less than that. You’ll see a lot in that eleven-to-sixteen-thousand-dollar range too.” […]

South American grain export competition rising

A University of Missouri ag economist says better than expected crop production out of South America is pushing the market lower, but there could be longer term implications. Ben Brown said solid production despite adversity might be a signal of things to come. “If this corn crop in South America faced everything it did this year and they’re still going to get a decent crop, not a record, but a […]

Soybeans were sharply lower on fund and technical selling. Beans followed the lead of vegetable oils, with bean oil dropping on talk of lower biodiesel demand following the recent sharply lower trend in crude oil. Soybean meal finished mixed on bull spreading. The U.S. crop is nearly planted and the USDA’s condition rating was down 2% on the week, but still in relatively good condition. Corn development catching up in western Iowa

Western Iowa farmer Kevin Ross says spring planting delays didn’t set his growing season back too much. “It’s kind of been normal for us to end up head high or almost tasseling by the 4th (of July),” he said. “I don’t know that we will quite be there. We’re going to certainly have some corn that’s head high by that point. I don’t think we’re real far behind.” The former […]

Winter wheat harvest shows yield variability for Kansas farmers

A Western Kansas farmer says winter wheat harvest is underway and yields are better than expected. “We’re definitely excited about seeing that, but we also know we have some poor fields coming on here.” David Schemm of Sharon Springs tells Brownfield he has more than 3,000 acres to harvest, but the majority has suffered from drought. “Some of it we’re pretty concerned with it. We’re hoping it’s going to make […]

Week by week: Nebraska farmer fears drought could worsen during the summer

Northeast Nebraska farmer Greg Anderson says he’s worried that relief from on-going drought will be short lived. “If we turn absolutely dry again and have that as a pattern, there’s very little subsoil moisture to work with. As roots go down, whether that’s corn or soybeans, they’re going to struggle to have the water requirements they need.” He tells Brownfield crops may need weekly-rain events to catch up and mature. […]
