MO farmer hesitant to market new crop grain

A Midwestern farmer is hesitant to market more new crop corn and beans despite strong markets. Nathan Alpers in central Missouri tells Brownfield he doesn’t want to overmarket grain when he’s always two weeks away from drought conditions. “That’s getting a little worrisome,” he said. “Not having any [crops] planted, how much do you sell early if you can’t raise it if we turn off dry.” The Cooper County farmer […]

Wheat up on winter crop conditions, slow spring planting

Soybeans were mixed, mostly modestly higher, adjusting spreads. Domestic crush demand is strong and China and unknown destinations both bought U.S. soybeans ahead of the open. Unknown picked up 133,000 tons, 78,000 for 2021/22 and 55,000 tons for 2022/23, while China purchased 133,000 tons, all for 2022/23. That pushes the two-day running total to 799,000 tons, most of that new crop. There are concerns about long-term demand from China due […]

Investigations into dicamba complaints reveal pattern of label violations

Investigations into dicamba complaints in Minnesota show applicators are struggling to follow the label. Joshua Stamper with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture says their ongoing work reveals a pattern of label violations. “A lot of what growers are struggling with is measuring wind speed at boom height, not attending the dicamba-specific training, just not necessarily paying attention to what is downwind when they make an application.” Applicators are also failing […]

Spring wheat offers opportunity

Commodity prices are driving some farmers to shift to spring wheat in the Upper Midwest. BASF Technical Service Representative Dan Melaas tells Brownfield there’s a large chunk of spring wheat in the region that would not have been planted if not for the Russian-Ukrainian war. “Return on investment is really good there so it makes it a lot easier to make that decision,” he says. Melaas says farmers are still […]

Agronomist: don’t rush to change crop rotation plans

A technical agronomist says crop rotation plans are holding steady so far despite wet and cool conditions in some areas. DEKALB Asgrow’s Jordan Arndell is based in southern Indiana. “Right now for people that have their plans set and were prepared to start planting in early April like we all hoped too, I don’t hear anybody changing the crop that they forecasted for their farm right now,” he says. But, […]

Klobuchar confident shipping reform bill is already making a difference

The co-author of legislation that targets shipping backlogs is confident the bill is already making a difference while it waits to be signed into law. The Ocean Shipping Reform Act recently passed the full Senate with unanimous support, and U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar tells Brownfield that sends a strong message. “To tell the Maritime Commission to put out a rule immediately that says (the shippers) have to charge fair rates […]

Another significant moisture-maker ahead of the Plains, Corn Belt

Showers and a few thunderstorms associated with a cold front will shift eastward across the Appalachians, reaching the Atlantic Seaboard later Tuesday and Tuesday night.  In the front’s wake, frost and freezes could threaten temperature-sensitive crops—including blooming fruits and emerged corn—as far south as the middle Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley, and the middle Atlantic States.   Meanwhile, a new storm system will cross the Northwest before reaching the nation’s […]

Short-term drying while largely cool weather covers the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, cool, cloudy weather prevails across the Red River Valley and the Great Lakes region.  Meanwhile, Freeze Warnings were in effect early Tuesday in the southwestern Corn Belt, including much of Iowa and northern Missouri.  Among Midwestern States, corn planting progress had reached double digits by April 24 only in Missouri and Nebraska—both with 10% planted.  U.S. corn planting, only 7% complete by April 24, is progressing […]
