Commentary. As a vocal proponent for animal agriculture, I receive letters, emails, social media messages and phone calls from those who read my column or listen to my commentary on the radio. Some throw shade. Some thank me for standing up for agriculture or sharing their story. I love receiving that feedback. I love knowing that there are so many people out there who believe that the majority of those involved in […]
WASHINGTON, June 1, 2022 - Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is announcing details of a framework to transform the food system to benefit consumers, producers and rural communities by providing more options, increasing access, and creating new, more, and better markets for small and mid-size producers. Today’s announcement builds on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine.
WASHINGTON, June 1, 2022 – The Biden-Harris Administration today released the Drought Resilience Interagency Working Group’s (IWG) Summary Report outlining the actions taken to date to improve drought-stricken communities' longer-term resilience to drought through financial and technical assistance. A cold front currently stretching from the Great Lakes region to the southern Plains will drift eastward, sparking showers and locally severe thunderstorms. By Thursday and early Friday, the front will largely clear the East Coast, moving over the western Atlantic Ocean. Meanwhile, development of a tropical depression or tropical storm can be expected during the next few days over the northwestern Caribbean Sea or the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. […]
A agronomist says slow growth and development for corn across areas of the Midwest could increase the chance of heat stress this summer. Michael Toohill with AgriSompo North America says crop emergence has been slow in the Eastern Corn Belt and Delta region. “Running through Central Illinois, even the corn planted in the late April is only V4 or V5 and the mid May corn is just V2 or V3. […]
A Southwest Nebraska farmer says the future cost of diesel fuel is alarming. Don Batie says he hasn’t purchased anything for 2023. “I did talk to one to retailer and what he was telling me was troubling. He doesn’t have anything for sale but the prices he’s been hearing from his wholesalers are higher than 2022. The corn and soybean farmer tells Brownfield the potential of higher fuel prices adds […]
A $1.1 billion meat processing plant has been proposed for western South Dakota. Project managing partner Megan Kingsbury tells Brownfield daily slaughter capacity would be around 8,000 head, and they’re hoping to break ground on the one-million square foot facility in 2023. “There is an extreme monopoly in the processing world right now,” Kingsbury said. “We are out to spread that wealth back around and put the producers back on […]
Across the Corn Belt, thunderstorms in the vicinity of a cold front are heaviest in the middle Mississippi Valley. Meanwhile, cool but dry weather in the upper Midwest favors late-season planting efforts, except in areas where fields remain too wet to support farm machinery. On May 29, U.S. corn planting was 86% complete, tied with 2011 for the second-slowest pace of the 21st century. In 2019, only 62% of the […]
