Cool, wet conditions impact calving in southwest Minnesota

Cool, wet conditions are impacting spring calving in southwest Minnesota. Cow/calf producer Mark Enninga of Fulda says they prefer to calve on pasture. “Being in alignment with nature and having calves out on green grass is always nice from a health standpoint, and the cows couldn’t hardly get to the pastures because of the snow.” But he tells Brownfield a stretch of warm weather earlier this month melted enough snow […]

Slow start to planting in parts of Ohio

Planting is off to a slow start in west central Ohio. Patty Mann, a farmer from Shelby County, says they were able to plant a small field of soybeans two weeks ago and are finally getting back in the field. “Last week was really nice and warm and we were waiting for things to dry out, but it was still kind of early and they were predicting a lot of […]

Nutrition program updates on table in debt ceiling discussion

A U.S. Congressman from Nebraska says an expansion of work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is still on the table as lawmakers seek support on a debt ceiling bill. But Don Bacon tells […]

Soil conditions lead fieldwork plans

A central Michigan farmer says cold soils have slowed most fieldwork. Carson City’s Ben Wilson tells Brownfield he’s been able to make fertilizer and herbicide applications, but planting has been limited to just sugarbeets. “Every time the calendar is April you still are like, ‘Hey, it’s early, it’s early,’ and next week will be May, and then we’ll be super nervous about getting the crop in,” he shares. Also an […]

That and we’ve also caught some rain here recently in the last week and a half. Those were a welcome sight […]

Another round of losses in soybeans, wheat

Soybeans were lower on fund and technical selling, with several months down sharply. Soybeans and products continued to liquidate as funds shed of their net-long positions. U.S. planting is slightly ahead of average, with more delays expected in some areas in the coming days. Still, it’s relatively early to get too concerned about soybean planting and further delays in corn planting could lead to some acres getting switched. Also, there’s […]
