Keokuk City Council Meetings
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Kent Travis Barnes, 61, of Keokuk, who passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Kent was born on November 26, 1964, in Keokuk, the son of Thomas “Tom” K. and Janet (Hutchens) Barnes. He graduated from Keokuk High School in 1983 and went on to dedicate 38 years of service to the Keokuk Community School District. Beginning his career as a custodian, Kent’s strong work ethic and commitment led him into a maintenance role, where he faithfully served the district for nearly four decades.
Kent was a proud member of the Sons of the American Legion and the AFSCME Union. His work ethic was one of his defining qualities. In addition to his full-time position, he often worked extra jobs sandblasting on weekends and mowing lawns in the evenings to provide for his family. Sundays were reserved for football, where he could always be found cheering on his beloved Minnesota Vikings. He never missed an opportunity to watch them play.
Known for his sharp wit and playful sense of humor, Kent loved teasing co-workers and sharing a good joke. Above all else, Kent was a loyal friend and devoted family man. His friends and family meant everything to him, and he was always there when they needed him—just a phone call away, ready to lend a hand or offer support without hesitation. He loved his brothers not only as family, but as his very best friends, sharing laughter, stories, and a lifetime of memories together. A devoted son, Kent visited his parents daily as they aged and lovingly cared for them—helping with chores and tending to their needs until their passing. He was a dedicated father and grandfather who eagerly anticipated spending his retirement years making memories with his children and grandchildren. Kent will be remembered for his loyalty, his laughter, and the deep love he had for those around him.
Kent is survived by his three children: Tiane (Myron) McVeigh, Kyler (Leah) Barnes, and Koryn Barnes, all of Keokuk; three brothers: Keith (Chris) Barnes of Panama City; Kevin Todd Barnes of Bloomington; and Kurt (Casey) Barnes of Keokuk; and four grandchildren: Kennedy and Hank Sparrow, and Knox and Lucy Barnes, all of Keokuk. He is also survived by two nieces, Kellyn Barnes and Katy (Vikas) Desraj; four nephews, Brian (DeAnna) Barnes, Cody (Cait) Varner, Kolbe Barnes, and Kaleb Barnes; as well as multiple cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m., with family meeting friends from 4 to 7 p.m., on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at DeJong-Printy Funeral Home. A private burial at Hickory Grove Cemetery will be held at a later date.
Kent’s legacy of hard work, humor, and deep devotion to family and friends will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Memorials may be directed to the Keokuk Athletic Boosters or the American Legion Post #41.
DeJong-Printy Funeral Home of Keokuk is in charge of arrangements.
