At Thursday’s Keokuk city council meeting, the demolition of the Unitarian Church was not the only issue that has been discussed for years that was resolved. Hamilton, Illinois resident and Tri-States Musician Memorial advocate Lisa LeMatty spoke to the council during workshop. On the agenda for the regular meeting was a motion to approve the placement of a monument honoring Tri-states musicians to be placed at Victory Park. LeMatty explained that fundraising was complete and a memorial that was appropriate to be placed in a flood plain was under construction. The council voted unanimously to approve the memorial and councilman Mike O’Connor explained that normally he doesn’t feel public parks are ideal spots for memorials but with the Geo M. Verity museum and the Hugh Cooper Memorial nearby, the musicians memorial is appropriate for Victory Park.
