MIAA honing in on long-term ag future

Michigan Agriculture Advancement is in its second phase of work to enhance the adoption of conservation practices on farms across the state.

CEO Julie Doll tells Brownfield the first phase of their project researched what barriers farmers face to implement practices.

“I don’t know of many other efforts that have taken this long-term approach of up to six years delving in with the stakeholders in a given state,” she says.

Four main themes surfaced during the initial research.  Barriers include limited market opportunities, conservation program limitations, a lack of confidence or time for practices, and inadequate social networks to support farmers.
