Miley Cyrus performs “No Freedom” and “The Climb” in honor of Las Vegas shooting victims on “The Tonight Show”

NBC/Andrew Lipovsky(NEW YORK) — On Monday, Miley Cyrus kicked off “Miley Week” on The Tonight Show with performances of Dido’s “No Freedom”in honor of the victims of Sunday’s shooting near the Mandalay Bay casino which the lives of at least 59 people and injured 527 others, and her 2009 hit “The Climb.”

Cyrus was joined on “No Freedom” by Adam Sandler – also a guest on Monday’s show, along with Dustin Hoffman. Later, she explained to host Jimmy Fallon the reason for choosing the song, which she previously performed during her backyard sessions in 2015.

“We’re supposed to be the land of the free, but we can’t have freedom if we’re constantly living in fear,” she explained.

“So I think, never bow down to bullies. That’s what my parents always said,” she continued, “and to stand up for what’s right and I think just constantly share hope, instead of encouraging any more fear.”

Miley closed the show with a rare performance of “The Climb,” which she also dedicated to the victims’ families.

In between, Miley discussed a number of things, including her 17-year-old sister Noah’s success, and “Younger Now,” the latest single from Miley’s album of the same name, which she says was inspired by her mother comparing her to an eight-year-old for dressing up as a reindeer on Christmas.

Miley’s response: “I kinda feel like an eight-year-old. I don’t have anything to prove and I don’t feel like I need to be anything but who I am, and it’s f****** Christmas mom!”

Cyrus also joined Fallon for a “Musical Genre Challenge,” where they took turns singing popular songs in different musical styles. For instance, Cyrus performed R. Kelly’s “Ignition” as a bluegrass number; and Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” became a pop tune.
