Small grain development is severely lagging across much of the Upper Midwest.

University of Minnesota Extension small grains specialist Jochum Wiersma says a cold, wet spring slowed planting.

“It really felt like the first week of May as far as what the weather felt like, what the fields looked like (and) where the crop was at. Unfortunately, we were in the second week of June.”

If it was a month earlier, he tells Brownfield the crop would be in phenomenal shape.
