The trend of having fewer farms continued in Wisconsin last year.  The USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service says the state had 64,100 farms which was down 300 from 2020. USDA says the amount of land in farms was 14.2 million acres in 2021, which was about 100-thousand fewer acres than in 2020.  The report says there are still far more small to medium-sized Wisconsin farms with under 100-thousand dollars in […]

Historical highs suggest soybean futures face stiff resistance above $16

A market analyst points to historical highs as farmers ponder the upside potential of soybeans. Kent Beadle with CHS Hedging says there was a peak of $16.63 in 2008 and five years later prices reached $16.30. “So two of the major years we peaked out at somewhat close to where our highs were last week, from which we reversed lower. And I think there’s some technical reasons for that.” Soybean […]

Farm group sees potential in USDA climate-smart program

A leading state farm group says USDA’s $1 billion climate-smart program announced earlier this month could be positive for rural revitalization. Missouri Farm Bureau President Garrett Hawkins tells Brownfield the program will boost to the ag economy if it creates more value-added opportunities in the heartland – like new grain and meat processing facilities. “A lot of what the Secretary is talking about does align with, in many respects, what […]

Nebraska farmer says RFS isn’t the answer to increase ethanol demand

A Western Cron Belt farmer says the U.S.’s renewable fuels policy isn’t the solution to increase ethanol demand.  Central Nebraska Farmer Clay Govier says the expanding the ethanol market should be a priority, but it shouldn’t come from the Renewable Fuels Standard.  “With crude prices as high as they are, I think ethanol is pretty profitable right now, so I don’t know if a mandate is 100 percent necessary.” And, […]

FBN says PACE worth looking into

The crop insurance director of the Farmers Business Network says a new crop insurance tool for split-applied nitrogen on corn is worth looking into if it’s offered in a grower’s county. Eric Sorensen says Post Applied Coverage Endorsement, known as PACE, is for farmers who have non-irrigated corn and who split-apply nitrogen. He says it provides a little extra coverage when it’s too wet to apply N after planting. ...
