WASHINGTON, June 28, 2023 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced it will establish a Tribal Advisory Committee and is requesting nominations for membership. The notice is among USDA’s efforts to remove barriers to service for tribal governments, citizens, and tribal nations.
At the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, live and feeder cattle were higher, shrugging off lower cash and wholesale business. Feeders did the bulk of the heavy lifting Wednesday, finding support in the sharply lower move in corn. August live cattle closed $1.37 higher at $1783.87 and October live cattle closed $.95 higher at $177.02. August feeder cattle closed $1.75 higher at $240.25 and September feeders closed $1.75 higher at $243.72. A […]
Some farmers across the Midwest say they’re surprised by how well crops are handling drought conditions. Nebraska farmer Cale Carlson farms 2,000 acres of irrigated corn and soybeans in Marquette. He tells Brownfield he’s just been able to keep up with crop water demands. “There’s not a whole lot of subsoil moisture right now, but the crops are hanging on where they’ve been able to get water. Danny Assman farms […]
Dry conditions in Missouri are affecting some fertilizer demand. MFA’s Director of Plant Foods Chris DeMoss says there was good demand for fertilizer this spring across Missouri, but farmers are slow to top dress corn as the dry conditions worsen. He says the application window is narrowing. “I think farmers are waiting on the rain, but it’s also, at some point, going to be far enough along that not much […]
The dry conditions are affecting the corn in central Missouri. MFA’s Vice President of Agri-Services Jason Weirich says overall, the corn look better than it should in the state due to minimal rainfall. He says that’s likely due to a deep root establishment from early planting, but there are some fields outside of northwest Missouri that have pineapple corn. “Pineapple corn is really the crop’s defense mechanism. The corn rolls […]

Northwest Iowa farmer Kelly Nieuwenhuis says the 2023 growing season has been better than expected. “We’ve been pretty fortunate,” he said. “We caught some spotty rains here lately, anywhere from 2-to-3 ½ inches in our area over the last two weeks. If we avoid the excessive heat, I think we’ll be good for a while.” He tells Brownfield working with dry conditions is nothing new. “We’ve been in an excessive […]
Soybeans were sharply lower on speculative and technical selling. There’s been at least some rainfall in dry parts of the Midwest this week, with the potential for more. August is the big month for beans, but an improved precipitation pattern during July would definitely be an asset for the crop. While this year’s crop might not reach those lofty initial projections, if the conditions are able to stabilize or improve, […]
